The U-joint Bellow is connected to the transom plate from the bell housing. The drive shaft that connects to the engine coupler and the u-joints are intended to be protected by it. When defective, a bellow failure can lead to a number of issues. Water can damage u-joints, gimble bearings, and even find its way into the outdrive itself through the input shaft seal if it enters the u-joint below. Here are a few signs that the bellows on your u-joint may be failing.

Water in the gear lube.
Water leaking into the boat.
Noise coming from the back of the boat.
Noise at the back of the boat when turning hard.
Oil spots under the drive when the boat is dry stored.

For either a year or three years from the date of the actual purchase, Sterndrive Engineering ("SEI") warranties all items it sells. Proof of purchase of the SEI product is a prerequisite for the enforcement of these guarantees. Prior to collecting warranty benefits under this clause, the client must provide satisfactory proof of purchase. All other guarantees and potential damages are limited and excluded under the terms of this agreement, as explained below, and only these one (1) year and three (3) year warranties against defects in material and workmanship are granted by SEI. These warranties start when the package is shipped.
